In My Garden Today
Posted by Alvin in Motown, z6 on April 11, 2025, 9:12 pm
Today, I took my pots of Amaryllis out of storage, to go outside, and bring out of their dry, winter dormancy. Hopefully, they will begin blooming in about 6 weeks.
I have two Queen's Tears Friendship Billbergia nutans, plants. One has smaller flowers, and bloomed in winter. Here is the other, larger-flowered plant in bloom...
Here, I lifted the cone that was over my VIOLET PICHI, Fabiana imbricata, and Grevillea victoriae 'Murray Valley Queen', to see how they fared, after a -3F winter....
I lifted the cone from my BAY LAUREL,Laurus nobilis 'Sicilan Sunshine', fared after the winter. Although the leaves that touched the top of the cone got some damage, the plant, overall, is fine. I harvested some leaves, last fall, for seasoning, last fall. Bay Laurel is z8 rated...
Here's a pic of my RAINBOW DOG HOBBLE, Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow'. This plant is a hardy BLE, and comes through z6 winters, with no protection, at all....

Alvin, The glory of the snow is beautiful. VI took my out of winter storage couple weeks ago and it shows no signs of anything. It quit blooming for five years. I’m about ready to toss it. I like the Bay Laurel. A house in our neighborhood here just off the road has a lot of Laurel. I think it’s probably the same kind. I don’t know but anyway it’s nice Evergreen. It gets very tall. I kinda like the hearts to fern. I see quite a bit of cast-iron plan here, especially around older homes, but it always has a little dead edges along some of it from winter damage so seems like it has to be grown in a very protected area to keep it out of the wind, or it will turn brown in the edges.

I like the glory of the snow. Nice show of flowers and an early bloomer. Do you label everything in your garden?
Thanks, Keith. I have a blue color Glory of the Snow, too.
No, I don't label "everything". Some plants still have their labels on them, or tags close by, after several years. Since I add plants gradually, I tend to remember what they are. I sometimes have to look up their botanical names, though, and use them, when discussing them, because some plants have the same common name, as others, to distinguish them from others.
Thanks, Fred. For the past two years, I have been storing the Amaryllis pots on their sides, in a dark room. I watched an online video about this method, and it seems to work. Three out of seven Amaryllis bulbs are showing a developing flower bud, at the bulb tops, already. The flower buds appear even before the Amaryllis flower stem grows. Right now, I have a piece of chicken wire over the pots, to ward off pesky squirrels.
Yeah, there are alot of plants commonly called "Laurels", but are not true Laurels. Quite a few are in the genus, Prunus, and are more closely related to stone fruits, like peaches, cherries, and plums, than they are to Bay Laurels .
My Cast Irons are spreading, but in gaps. Notice the leaf outside the Wall o Water. It was covered BETWEEN the Wall o Water, and the rose cone, because it was too far from the rest of the clump.
Believe it or not, I spotted some collard plants, at Home Depot, today. They are asking 6 DOLLARS, for 6 pack of plants, or $4 for ONE collard start in a 3 inch pot.
How expensive!
I'm glad I started my own from seed. From a $2 packet, I could have grow way more than just 6 plants for those prices.
