In My Garden Today
Posted by Alvin in Motown, z6 on March 30, 2025, 12:08 am
Yesterday, I planted some spring Pansies. For those who may not know, like cool season veggies, Pansies are cool season flowers. They prefer cooler temps to grow in. I also started the outdoor hardening-off process, for my collard starts, that will go into the ground, in mid-April....
I took a peek at my Hardy Camphor tree, Cinnamomum checkiangiense, to see how it came through the winter. Although this is perhaps the hardiest cinnamon, or camphor tree, it is still only z8 hardy...
The HARDY CYCLAMEN, Cyclamen hederifolium, is still green in the garden. These plants form new leaves, each fall, which last throughout winter, through early spring (even during bouts they are covered in snow, for weeks)...
This plant is another "Down Under" native. Known commonly as the DAISY BUSH, but botanically, as Olearia haastii, this species is one of the hardiest daisy bushes. Anybody else growing a hardy daisy bush?

Alvin , I love your hardy Cyclamen! Love your Crocus. What zone for the Daisy Bush? Hardy Camphor Tree is a rarity . Alvin’s Botanical would be worth a tour if ever in Detroit, I have several first Cousins , last name Rodríguez and Perry. Some may be married now and have different last names.

Thanks, Fred.
I have another type of Cyclamen, that is also evergreen, in the colder months. I has no leaf variegation, but the leaf undersides are purplish. Yes, the hardy camphor tree is on the rare side. Ian of Sequim, WA, who used to post here, years ago, was the first who discussed this plant, and its relative hardiness, along with the hardiness of this variety of daisy bush. Both are rated z7 hardy.
