Much colder than last year, even though my coldest low of -3F (a z6B minimum), matched last year's coldest low. This year's cold has had much longer duration. Last year's cold snaps maxed-out, at 5 days, each. Snow has been on the ground, since last month, although nearly gone, now. Well, this year's veggie starts are underway. The pic below, shows some tomato and collard seedlings. Since the collards grow faster, they will be ready to go into the ground, by mid-late April, after one transplant to 6-packs, between now and then. It has decided to bloom now, but flowers off and on, all year'round. Some seeds, that have a very high germination rate (for example, members of the cabbage family, like collards belong to), can be sown one seed per pack cell, and wind up with very few empty cells. I sowed these thickly, with seeds from last year. I didn't know if any viability would be lost, from seeds from last year. Didn't faze these collards, though, lol. Other seeds, though, don't have as high germination rate, or viability. This is one reason why I start seeds in a "community pot", first. Also, for some reason, tomato, pepper and eggplant seedlings seem to be stockier, with healthier roots, if transplanted once, before going into the ground, for good.

With such temps, it's likely time for cool season veggies to be sown, in the ground, where you are. They can take light freezes down into the upper 20s, easily, if you normally get such lows, from now on. Good guess, Fred. I took the cone off to take a peek at my Florida Anise, or Illicium floridana. It seems to have gotten through my -3F winter low. Take a look at my Florida Anise, and then look at my new plant again: https://photos.app.goo.gl/eQu2dRm345Crf1u99 However, my new plant is a male JAPANESE SKIMMIA, or Skimmia japonica. This type of Skimmia has the sexes on separate plants, like hollies. Since this plant has flower buds on it, already, is how they were able to determine the plant's sex. The female buds and flowers look a tad different, than males. However, there is a self-pollinating Skimmia (Skimmia reevesiana), in which both male and female flowers are on each plant. So, every Reeve's Skimmia produces berries. This plant came from a nursery, in Oregon. This is a plant very rare to find, in Michigan. Since, like Aucuba, is rated z7 hardy, contributes to me not finding this plant, locally. Still though, Aucuba is hardy here, if given a tarp covering, over the winter.
