In My Garden Today
Posted by Alvin in Motown, z6 on January 22, 2025, 11:19 pm
As bitter cold has plants on the outside, either fully dormant, and/or protected, many things on the inside are growing. Some fruits are actually beginning to ripen. Last summer, I posted a pic of my tree tomato, Cyphomandra betacea, first when it began flowering, and later when fruits set. Now, the FRUITS ARE BEGINNING TO RIPEN. If anyone has never tried the fruit of this South American native, is missing a treat. They have a tomato taste, only sweeter, if you can imagine that:
Recently, I posted a pic of a NATAL PLUM, Carissa macrocarpa, I got. It is a dwarf variety of the plant, called 'Boxwood Beauty'. It had a few green fruits on it. Now, ripening has begun. Anybody ever try this fruit?..
Recently, I mentioned starting some CHERIMOYA seeds, and showed a pic of them in their community pot. Well, now, they have been transplanted into their own individual cups...
Here are some RAMBUTTAN, Nephelium lappaceum, plants I germinated, from seeds I received from the Big Island of Hawaii. As you can see, one seedling is growing faster than the others, and has already grown taller than its florescent light fixture. Rambuttan seedling growth is unusual, in that, although not a legume, like peas, seed leaves remain BELOW SOIL LEVEL. First leaves form on the tips of bare stems. incidentally, rambuttan fruits are similar to those of lychee, and longan, except Rambuttan fruits are covered with wiry, "hair"....

Alvin , eating those exotic fruits will be a treat. I assume some of the tropical markets or Latin bodegas might have some of these. I go to a Mexican bodega in Maldin sometimes for tamal. I never check for fruit. I do sometimes buy the mango salt covered lollipops, which are delicious. The Rambuttan fruit sounds odd. You will soon have a Cherimoya plantation, lol. The Carissa fruit does look somewhat like a small ripening tomato. BTW my daughter’s name is Carissa .
Thanks, Fred. I'm waiting for the tree tomatoes to fully ripen, before picking. The skin on them is thicker than that on regular tomatoes. Last year was my first year harvesting, and tasting tree tomatoes. After cutting them in half, the flesh can be scooped out with a spoon, but otherwise eaten like a regular tomato. I'm guessing that a Mexican market would carry them. Tree tomatoes are also known as, tomarillos. A Mexican store might carry them under this Spanish name.
Yeah, I was really surprised that all 4 of my Cherimoya seeds germinated, after they all floated, for 24 hrs, in a cup of water, rather than sink. I hope the seedlings continue to grow.
Rambuttan fruit does look rather odd. It is another Asian plant, that has gained popularity, in the Western Tropics, in recent years.
Interesting how your daughter got the Natal Plum genus name, lol.
