Off guard at 5* Posted by Rob N TN on January 20, 2025, 4:29 pm I'm not having any luck with a juvenile Sabal Palmetto or my hardy hybrid Wagnerianus x Nainital. They aren't heated, just mulch and a plastic dome and my Wolfhound is always getting into that area and knocking things around. Not worried about the Sabal palmetto (3g) it thinks its a sabal minor and the little hybrid palm (3g) has proven hardy here but it had 2" of snow and a low of 5* this morning. That's about the only concerns I'm having so far with the arctic weather. I checked the big palms and they are warm. Hopefully after this week things will return to normal conditions. I checked everyone's lows this morning out of curiosity (except Lloyd and Keith's areas) and I was the loser and everyone was warmer, a few just a degree or two but anyways, KUDOS to Kevin in SE TN staying in his z8 comfort zone and Fred his z9b-z10 that is awesome. Thanks for reading my rant. 21* currently with a low of 12* tonight. Wont see above freezing until Wednesday

The high todsy here was a sunny cold 34, more like Fairbank, Alaska than here.the high in Knoxville, Tennessee was the same as Fairbanks!!! Thats a ridiculous number for a high. Anyway, it’s January and it’ll pass and soon be spring. I just hope everybody’s palms come through this Arctic weather . I’m worried about that Butia out there in the front yard. but it’s in God’s hands, I guess,you would say. Tss as me hope the little Pss as based in the pot out front never miss a beat. They get best gown by cold temps and revive by noon, such resuliance! Iffy if we get anything out of this next Southern storm, time will tell. We just hope for no ice,

Highs have been in single digits. A little concerned for my needle and camellias and yucca unprotected . Usually I have snow to cover and protect but not this Year. It would be a lot colder if we had snow pack.

Was supposed to be -14 f by morning but right now the towns on each side of us show -17 and we are -19 in our little valley. Our lowest winter low is usually lower than this though. High was -5 today but should break out above zero by tomorrow. Absolutely no snow cover for protection though as it has been a bone dry winter. We wish you luck with your tender species.

I think our plants would do better with ten hours at -30 with snow cover than this staying below zero for highs (low -19 now) and the ground dust dry. Plus the intense sun on these frigid days probably creates a lot of cell damage. Good luck with your plants Keith - These dry cold spells can leave some ugly surprises come spring.

I may hit 3* or 4* Wednesday morning .Looking for that 32* Wednesday and it has been sunny, that helps some. Thanks friend.

There is still snow on the ground and it wont melt. School kids have went to school 2 days since Christmas. Its actually been a bad winter. Tuesday nite will be our coldest around 3* to 4* degrees and the howling wind never stops. I think your Butia will be OK. Its settled in good. I think you will see all snow and little ice. Don't be shoveling any snow, it will be gone soon enough. Wednesday on looks normal here but you might be chilly Wednesday. Stay warm amigo mio.

My windmills and minors are fine but my 25 YO R.hystrix for the first time ever took a hit at 13 degrees. The hardiest palm in the world. Only like 20%. It's real weird, the leaves on that portion are still green but not as green as the rest of the tree, but are also really leaning down. The rest is fine. I have 5 sagos under plastic buckets with C-9's and they are totally green. For the ones that don't know me I am north of Atlanta in what was supposed to be zone 8a but clearly is not this year. (Zone 2 in my name is a joke LOL) pat

We haven’t gone below zero in quite a while. I’d say most of my plants can handle that. Tonight is supposed to be -8 hopefully we beat that too. Sorry to hear of the cold and snow you got amico. I sure hope they're wrong and hope you warm up. I think your plants be will ok. Tomorrow it begins to return to normal conditions (I hope) above freezing in the daytimes and by the weekend no below freezing lows. The south along the gulf are getting blizzard conditions WOW , so much for global warming. grazie Tom

Your Needle palm will be fine but your likely going to see snow today. I think you will be fine by tomorrow or the next day. This weather is crazy. New Orleans , Mobile and Pensicola expecting 4" and Greenville SC, Columbia and most of that state should see 4" also. Icy problems not seen to be a threat in the south as previously thought. Glad you're prepared Pat. Stay warm. Thanks for posting and hope to hear a good North Georgia report next month if not sooner.

One report is saying 4" for most of South Carolina today but they have backed down on any ice storms, thankfully. The kids "might" go back to school tomorrow but the weather has changed and instead of plus 5* its now minus -1* by morning and with the winds, they may cancel. Poor kids. I hope you somehow miss the southern blizzard Fred. Be safe, Hope you and Ms Dorothy see a few flurries. After this, it could be another year before it happens again. Gracias mi amigo

I agree, after a long cold winter the palms fronds long a little crappy. Crossville-livingston will be severely cold tonight. We are still snow covered here.

I HATE SNOW!! Sounds like you've done a lot of work protecting your stuff. This is a real short-term event, so your babies should make out fine.

I went below freezing Sunday at 3pm and won't get above that until about 3 o'clock today, and only for a few hours at best. Then it's back down to the teens again. This may kill the windmills with three rough winters in a row. Oh well, I won't buy another. I'll just plant with something else. Kevin seTN

We got to 28* today and this morning fell briefly to 4* but will be in the upper 30*s tomorrow with a low of 20* in the morning. I'm glad the worst is out of here. Your still in your USDA range of z8 and I was lucky to have stayed z7a/b (well, I did have a 5* recently but a 4* this morning. They were forecasting below zero here but I got lucky. Thanks Kev
