It is still alive Posted by Cindy NC on January 17, 2025, 5:54 pm It has been years since I have posted anything about palms, mostly because I no longer buy/plant them. I recognize names on this forum! After multiple moves here in NC, I did manage to carry several palms with me to my current locale in Siler City. The most notable one, a Jubaea chilensis that is now approximately 22-23 years (I have lost track as I think I have been growing it for maybe 17 yrs.) old, still grows here in the Piedmont. I have managed to cover it up for winter about every other year. This year it will face winter as is. I would like to post a photo I took today but have forgotten how to embed photos on here. When I click 'upload image', nothing happens.

I still see references to you growing that famous Jubaea. I do remember you being active on another Palm forum years ago. My last name is Siler . My family founded Siler City. Plikard Siler came to the USA in 1741 to Pennsylvania snd then after a few years came down to NC . He married Elizabeth Hartsoe. They had had five sons and four daughters. . I am a descendant of his son, Jacob. Jacob went to The Cumberland Mountains and settled along the Cumberland River. There is a Siler community there. His brother William founded Franklin , NC. There are 2 mountains with Siler name. I have visited Siler City in the past. My wife is from Franklin, NC. There is a yearly Siler reunion in Franklin . It is the oldest family reunion in the US. Silers come to it from all over. Nice to see your post.

We are from Pennsylvania, and like your descendants, moved to NC 34 yrs ago. Like every other small town in the SE, Siler City is changing quickly. Good to hear from you, Fred!

Interesting place, but not many migrating birds to see. We did drove around the area...very mountainey and pretty. No word from Gary. Haven't been down that way for years. Still have the old Jubaea and a Butia x Jubaea, that I left for dead one winter. It pulled a Lazareth on me. It looks better than ever today. All bets are off for both Jubs after this cold stretch hits us this coming week. Neither are winter protected. How are your palms and things doing? Thanks for the tips on photo posting.

Snow through Sunday night here with a low of 7 Monday morning. You might see some . I was hoping you had the Old Jubaea and the Butia x Jubaea. I know they will be ok but if you had some spare blankets . . . . . . . Well sometimes no news is good news so hope Gary is well Cindy I have a sister that lives in Kingsport and its not far from the Cumberland Gap. Sadly I've never been. Glad you got to scout the area. Our local Natl park The Big South Fork is similar but more remote. There are numerous dark skies for viewing at night and lots of bears
