Cold Fronts 2025 Posted by alex_7b on December 31, 2024, 7:16 pm Weather bloggers calling for snow and single-digit lows by 12 JAN. Today reports popped up on local channels, calling for mid-teens and noncommittal for snow. Said coldest in 4 years. I guess they forget about Dec 2022. I broke down and bought a gas-powered generator today-30A to keep the blower on the furnace running.

I hope we don’t go into the teens. My Butia prorate will not like that much. My Callistemon citrinus might hate it as well. Cold temps don’t seem to bother Trachycarpus much. My large sago will brown out but I can cut off all fronds and it will flush out new fronds come Spring.

Strange that our forecast temperatures are still reasonable for January even though we show as being in that blob moving down from the arctic. I can't believe that you could end up colder than us since the system seems to pass over us first. But then there aren't many years where we don't get to -25 at least a couple times.

We don't have much if any, mountains to our north or west to help protect us from these cold fronts. The mountains actually start here and areas eastward for Tennessee. This area and most of Tennessee is a buffer zone between north and south weather systems and it normally goes either way. Kentucky has recently started becoming that buffer zone but I only live 25 miles south of Kentucky. The jet streams are the main reason for unpredictable weather since they both can straddle the area and lastly topography from almost 7000'el to my east (Fred's saving grace) to near sea level in the delta further in the west state.. Hoping I miss the ice storm, We've had some bad ones here through the years, snow not so much, and snow depth for protection doesn't happen here, just cold spikes. Everyone has an interesting story to tell about their climate I guess and wish it was milder where you live Lloyd but hopefully it does keep the Californians at bay and others who want to change your way of life in your beautiful area, but mine isnt really suitable for the things I want to grow. We are in that band stretching from the Arctic Circle to the Gulf of Mexico with little more than some barbed wire fences to deflect the fronts. That is why in spring and fall our temperatures can go from 90s to single digits and back again in short order, along with 50mph winds. Sorry - Couldn't resist. Yes, for what you want to grow, systems like the one forecast can be challenging. Wishing you the best. I broke down and started putting bags of rock around the bottoms of our palms today. They are looking great so will mulch them in for another winter.

I've noticed through the years that those more challenged, speak less about it. That's why I had rather hear of a palm or agave growing outside the norm than some fancy gardens in the south or west. I like your mulching and looks like a heat magnet. That rock is very expensive here to use as mulch. Thanks for sharing a pic friend and things to stay humble about.

That's why we started with cactus and agave since they are some of the few things other than conifers that can stay green here in the winter without succumbing to desiccation. Those that are most challenged probably don't want to admit how many plants they have killed trying to find the few that will thrive for them . Here the lava rock bags are about $2 on fall clearance and last indefinitely if kept out of the sun when not in use. It works very well as an insulator, holding lots of air, -It doesn't get wet and freeze solid, losing its insulating power, -It is very light and easy to move, -The bags are heavy plastic depending on brand (with no holes so another air barrier) that last many years, -The rodents don't nest in it. -It is very inexpensive in the fall when the farm supply houses want to get rid of it.
