The jet streams are the main reason for unpredictable weather since they both can straddle the area and lastly topography from almost 7000'el to my east (Fred's saving grace) to near sea level in the delta further in the west state..
Hoping I miss the ice storm, We've had some bad ones here through the years, snow not so much, and snow depth for protection doesn't happen here, just cold spikes. Everyone has an interesting story to tell about their climate I guess and wish it was milder where you live Lloyd but hopefully it does keep the Californians at bay and others who want to change your way of life in your beautiful area, but mine isnt really suitable for the things I want to grow.
