How low to go Posted by Lloyd IA on November 30, 2024, 10:56 am We have been experimenting with leaving less cold hardy agaves planted in the berm until late fall and then ripping them up to put in a cold dark place until spring. This worked very well last year with no damage to plants. This year the same ones will be left outside a bit longer to see how they do. Here is an Agave x protifolia 'Emerald Giants' on its second 6 degree f morning. Daytime highs are a sunny 20 degrees. Some other PDN Raleigh hardy suspects in the background. These PDN hybrids are not as hardy as the ones that stay outside all winter, but they sure seem resilient to all types of weather other than arctic.

Id love to try that one but it would be a dig and harvest because of so much moisture seen here in winter. It reminds me of the palms in Truth or Consequences,NM because of a dry climate. Your arid garden is amazing. I have 8 species indoors at the moment. Thanks for sharing that Agave x protifolia "Emerald Giants" I will check it out

I thought my environment and digging it up to put in cold storage each winter would stunt it. And I thought its potential growth rate would help mitigate all that so it could grow some. But it is taking off rapidly - and its potential size down south is six feet tall by ten feet wide. That cold is nothing for our hardy ones out there.

So glad you were willing to try. Many people miss out. The structure of that agave is attractive. I wonder if Fred has ever heard of it? Lloyd did you ever speak with a Robert Pittman from Idaho. He used to post here years ago. He was a college professor in Pocatello. He was well know in the arid world. Thanks friend.

" Rob, Agave Emerald Giant is a hybrid developed by Plant Delights Nursery The last plant I ordered from plants nursery cost me $95 with postage. It was an Agave Kraken.. i t subsequently died. it just a weak plant and couldn’t get going. I will never order from them again and I’ve ordered a lot from him over the years . I also visited the nursery twice years ago now.

Can always try. I have had some Agaves do well here that are rated xoneb 9 and it is a wet cold so one 8A here. I do not winter protrr er ct ant of my xeric plants.

People who have been growing it for years that post on Agaveville call it something else but both use x Emerald Giants I've never had any luck with Brian in Ky. I won't be ordering there anymore. Although way to expensive, I've always had the best luck growing Tony's plants.

One thing to keep in mind is they grow their plants FAST under ideal growing conditions. But this means they are sometimes soft when adjusting to real world conditions. They come around if they are babied long enough during the transition. Like some of their zone 7 agaves sitting in a 3 degree f morning out front right now - I try my best to kill them.

But my previous ventures into arid plants were before the internet easy access to information, and have just started back up with them a few years ago.
