How low to go
Posted by Lloyd IA on November 30, 2024, 10:56 am
We have been experimenting with leaving less cold hardy agaves planted in the berm until late fall and then ripping them up to put in a cold dark place until spring. This worked very well last year with no damage to plants. This year the same ones will be left outside a bit longer to see how they do. Here is an Agave x protifolia 'Emerald Giants' on its second 6 degree f morning. Daytime highs are a sunny 20 degrees. Some other PDN Raleigh hardy suspects in the background. These PDN hybrids are not as hardy as the ones that stay outside all winter, but they sure seem resilient to all types of weather other than arctic.
