Seed questions Posted by Jason Western PA on October 27, 2024, 5:55 am Fall is in full swing here. Leaves are past peak. :-/ Question. When do I know the seeds are ready to pick. When should I do that? Also, not pictured. My big windmill has alot of roots showing at the base. What do you all do to cover them. Should I get some dirt. I have been doing mulch but it's getting big. My first Needle seeds Sabal seeds. Seven sons is looking great still

Remember needle, palm seeds smell a lot like vomit, lol. Looks like a good crop on the Sabal minor as well. I’ll have to look at my needle palm to see if it’s got any seed. I haven’t noticed it does or doesn’t.. My sable minors have seeds again this year. I tried to cut off all the seed pods on my Trachycarpus because they are seeding everywhere. I’ve got 100 or two or 300 outback that I need to pull up. I just might pull up and try to pot a few in the Spring.

How "high" was it planted, originally, and and has it been affected by alot of high winds, as if to uproot it? I know you use alot of wood mulch, at the base of your foundation plants. Which of your needles are fruiting? I'm thinking that it could be too late for the Sabal seeds to ripen. What's red on the 7 Sons? Seed heads?

That heirloom crape myrtle moniker, The Seven Sons Tree is just beautiful. Exposed roots are very common with Trachycarpus. The roots are just trying to seek moisture. Thats how they do it. Cover with dirt or mulch before cold weather but water some first. You could even do it now. Seeds (especially sabal minor) will ripen after being harvested in their green color. Alex-Atlanta z7b shared that here years ago and it works. Thanks for sharing some neat pics.

Each year I push more mulch up around the roots. I think it's because of how tall it is. I'll leave the seeds. No, the seven sons trees are the flowers. The needle palm that I have in a pot has needles.

Posted by Rob N TN on October 28, 2024, 10:28 am, in reply to "Re: seeds and roots 101" Jason it wont hurt a bit to wait but if I wait too long the birds start feeding on them and/or they will naturally fall from the bracts. A good sign is too see black and green seeds on the same bracts and its more than safe to harvest all seed. The green ones will turn quickly. You might want to ask AJ or Fred about trachycarpus seed harvest. I have only had large flowering male trachycarpus here. Good luck Jason
