In My Garden Today
Posted by Alvin in Motown, z6 on September 14, 2024, 9:50 pm
After a growing season, that has dropped an adequate amount of water, in my garden, September has been quite dry. The next week, according to the long-range forecast, will continue the dry, sunny, but warm trend.
The HARDY PERSIAN SHIELD, Strobilanthes attenuata, is blooming! There are tropical forms of this plant, but this one is hardy in z6. Anybody else growing Hardy Persian Shield? It's another great late summer-early fall bloomer...
Here is another type of tuberous BEGONIA, Begonia boliviensis 'Santa Rita', I am growing. So, this is another type that I dry down, over the winter, and store, with the corms still planted in their basket. However, in the meantime, it is still blooming!
Here's a new SNAKE PLANT cultivar I got. It is a type of SANSIEVERA. Sansieveras are also known commonly, as Mother in Law's Tongue. These plants can have various forms of variegation. However, this cultivar, named 'Moonshine', has a very light grayish-green color, that was named because its leaves appear whitish, like the Moon....

Interesting plant material, Alvin . The hardy Zperdisn Dhirld is new to me. Begonia is bright! Understandable how Snowberry got its name, Fall Anemone is pretty. Dry, very dry here. I watered some plants. Ester here is cheap enough but sewer charges are outrageous!

Thanks, Fred.
I agree, that the hardy Persian Shield is interesting. I got it from Far Reaches Farm, year before last. I wanted to see if "a Persian Shield" would actually be hardy, in my cold, z6 climate. I could forget about such a plant ever being found locally. The reason is that people will buy a plant, if it is already in flower. Since this plant is just a leafy plant for most of the season, it wouldn't be something that would sell, unfortunately, to the average consumer, unless they saw the plant in flower, online. The hanging basket Begonia does have a fiery, orange color. I agree that the sewerage portion of a water bill, is what makes the overall water bill high. Thank goodness, this year, I am just beginning to use water with the hose, in September. Here's hoping for more moisture, in October. Its helpful for hardy plants going into dormancy, to be fully hydrated, for the upcoming winter.
