Great Red Hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus) blooming Posted by David-Shenandoah Valley of VA on August 31, 2024, 6:12 pm This plant is a native to Coastal Georgia and Florida. It is rated with zone 6 cold hardiness. I bought it at Mail Order Natives last year. I love the large red flower.

It looks like Hibiscus coccineus. They sell one now called ‘Texas Star. My mom always grew this one. I grew it in north central kentucky. My mom got her original plant from a friend in Georgia in the 1930’s , I believe. She gave it as a pass along plant to a lot of people. It should be absolutely hardy. I planted some of the seed pods, and over the years had a variety of hues of color on some of the offspring.

One of the common names is Texas Star, even though it's not native there. I was wondering about the seed pods. I took one off before it matured because I wanted to promote further flowering. However, I might try to harvest one of those seed pods since you mentioned that.

I can't believe this one is native and zone 6. It wasn't happy most of the summer with the intense heat and drought. Recent rains and cooler temperatures have helped it. The butterfly bush in the photo is a new planting also. It slowed down flowering during the heat but has picked up with cooler temperatures.

It looks great! Also surprising, as you have said, how well it has done, despite your recent dryness. This particular Hibiscus, like Cannas, can live in near bog conditions. They say Buddleia respond to repeated removal of spent blooms. This is said to increase blooming.

It would probably be happier in a marshy environment. Yes, Buddleia probably flowers longer with the removal of spent blooms. What I noticed this summer was that the consistent heat seemed to put the blooming process in suspended animation for awhile. After tropical storm Debby came through and the 90s heat subsided in mid August, the blooming process increased.

A little rain and some cooler temps get them back where they need to be. I got 2" of rain Saturday (surprise shocker in this drought) and a light shower off and on since. Hope you get some more rain in the great valley.

August Helped A Lot Posted by David-Shenandoah Valley of VA on September 2, 2024, 4:06 pm, in reply to "Rain" Tropical Storm Debby helped us out a lot. It brought 5 inches of rain. We had a couple of decent rains early in the month before that. But even after that, they were still saying we were in a moderate drought situation. The problem was 2023 was well below average in precipitation. We were already in a deficit situation before this summer. So, after Debby, they were saying we needed to replenish our water reserves. Then came the last week of August. A rather nasty storm came through Thursday in the late afternoon and early evening that dumped around 2.5 inches. A storm that moved through Saturday afternoon brought about 1.5 inches more. So, according to a local weather station Website, we got around 11 inches in August. Even with all of that, we still may be considered in a deficit situation because of last year.

Unbelievable and lucky Posted by Rob N TN on September 7, 2024, 1:20 am, in reply to "August Helped A Lot" So glad you got that rain. We got 2.5" this past August and 2" was in one event. The rain expected today didn't happen so we have another chance next Friday. Hope we get a mild system from the gulf soon but it's usually after a bad situation along the coast. I guess its better to be in drought than having harmful conditions elsewhere. Thanks David.

Gulf storms Posted by David-Shenandoah Valley of VA on September 7, 2024, 1:05 pm, in reply to "Unbelievable and lucky" Yes, Gulf storms are actually better at delivering rain for us too. The ones from the Atlantic often get pushed away from us by an approaching high pressure system. We got lucky with TS Debby. But Gulf storms (especially western Gulf) approach from the southwest and get pushed our way. Hurricane Camille dumped a lot of rain with catastrophic amounts to the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge.

It rained over 12" that day and night and if trees survived the winds, they bent backwards toward the ground. Debbie might have brought a small shower but several Americans will killed NE of Tennessee. The gulf storms do approach during our hottest and driest times and looks like something in the Bay of Campeche will at least bring badly needed rain into Southern Tennessee. I'm far north in Tennessee but have fingers crossed, Thanks David.
