I saw my first hummer at the feeder. It was a female, or a juvy male (no red spot on throat). I am always glad to see them, in summer... Here's a pic of my variegated CLEYERA, C. fortuna. Actually, this form is a hybrid of our familiar Rose of Sharon, H. syriacus with Hibiscus paramutabilis. The hybrid is a much hardier plant. The blooms are larger than Rose of Sharon, too! My mother had a large pot of those, a favorite of hers. The double hardy perennial sunflower is beautiful. Yummy, on those blackberries. The variegated Cleyera is nice. Cleyera is grown in ground here. I love the extra shiny foliage. Both rose of Sharon’s are nice!

I like the lilies. I must admit that I am not a big fan of Rose of Sharon. The individual blooms are nice, but the overall appearance on the tree can look a little messy. I planted Red Hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus) last year. I moved it this spring. The intense heat and draught made it weepy all through July. It finally bloomed the other day. It's a nice large bloom. It's hard to believe it's a native. My only complaint is that the blooms only last one day. I have only seen one hummingbird this year also. It was around my Incrediball Hydrangea back in the spring. I haven't seen many butterflies recently either. I did see some bees around my Chaste Tree that kept blooming well during the heat. The butterfly bush stopped blooming almost entirely, but is doing better since the rain. I guess the heat and draught suppressed activity.

The Night Jasmine, although dubbed "jasmine", is one of a number of plants called this, but are not really jasmines, at all. Many plants called jasmines are fragrant. Each type though, although fragrant, has a different scent. I have an Orange jasmine, a night jasmine, and a couple Confederate jasmines. All are fragrant, even though they aren't classified in the true jasmine, Jasminum genus. The perennial sunflower cultivar, is: 'Happy Days'. My Cleyera has been in the ground for several years. It gets winter protection. The plant came from Woodlanders. They boast having true Cleyera plants, and not Ternstroemea, that is often called Cleyera, but is not a true Cleyera. Yeah, I will probably bump up my Rain Lilies to a bigger pot, next year, because they have filled the current pot, to its edges.

I think the early spring weather affected migratory birds, like hummingbirds and orioles, this year. I saw NO orioles, this year. Both bird types have been suffering, in recent years, due to loss of habitat, and pesticide poisons. I have seen a few types of butterflies, this year. They all seem to like the same plants, as hummingbirds, and bees. I have a Chaste Tree, but in shade, it does bloom, at all. Same goes for Butterfly Bush. I usually prune away half of my Rose of Sharon plants, from the previous year's growth, with pruners, in spring. This helps increase branching, and blooming, as well as overall compactness of the plants. Flower drop can be considerable, but not as bad, as say, from Mimosa....requires a broom, or rake, lol. I didn't know Hibiscus coccinea flowers lasted just a day, like daylilies.

The hardy Confederate Rose hybrid flowers resemble large, regular Rose of Sharon blooms, without the die-back, that Confederate Rose normally gets, even in z8. Yep, Rain Lilies look like larger flowered Crocus, that open wider.
