Some of my plants need repotting faster than others. Here is a pic of a Sabal palmetto 'Lisa', I got from Plant Delights, about 2 years ago, in a 3 inch pot. It was immediately bumped up to a gallon pot pot. Now, from the pic below, you can see it is ready to be bumped up to a 2 gallon, because the roots have reached the bottom. If the pot had been sitting on soil, the roots would have not only grown through the drainage holes, but entered the soil below. This would possibly cause roots to be severed, and possibly kill the tree. Sabals hate root damage:

This pic shows how Rice Paper Plant quickly develops a long tap root. I received this as tiny, little PLUG plant, in early spring. I potted it into a clay 3 inch pot. Now, check out the taproot that came through the drainage hole. Roots have not even filled out the pot, otherwise. Nevertheless, the plant is going into gallon:

Here is a RED GUAVA seedling, I received last fall, also as a tiny starter plug. I potted it up, into a 3 inch pot. Now, the roots are starting to grow through the drainage hole. It is now ready to go into a gallon pot. For anyone unfamiliar with guavas, they are tropical fruit trees, that produce sweet, albeit seedy fruits:
