This pic shows how Rice Paper Plant quickly develops a long tap root. I received this as tiny, little PLUG plant, in early spring. I potted it into a clay 3 inch pot. Now, check out the taproot that came through the drainage hole. Roots have not even filled out the pot, otherwise. Nevertheless, the plant is going into gallon:

Here is a RED GUAVA seedling, I received last fall, also as a tiny starter plug. I potted it up, into a 3 inch pot. Now, the roots are starting to grow through the drainage hole. It is now ready to go into a gallon pot. For anyone unfamiliar with guavas, they are tropical fruit trees, that produce sweet, albeit seedy fruits:
