I don't know if you meant by "growing in the ground", whether you meant "growing in the ground, unprotected", or not. Some people don't consider themselves as "being able to grow something", unless they can grow it, unprotected (not true), even if it limps, from damage, by spring.
Bay Laurel is rated z8 hardy, and up. Although I have discovered some subtropical plants that turned out to be hardier, than say z7b, unprotected, Bay Laurel is not one of them (at least, not in z6, or at temps between 0F and -10F). Other Bay Laurel plants have been damaged, or killed in my garden, below 10 degrees, in previous years.
