A peat-based soil mix is alot lighter, too, than a soil mix with alot of sand, or clay, in terms of making a given pot heavier to lift.
Still, though, since your zone is closer to that of the Bay Laurel's "happy zones", than me, you could get by with much less protection, to get your plant come through a winter unscathed. For instance, some who frequent this board might only have a handfull of lows below 15 degrees. This relatively few number of "colder" days, would be very easy to provide protection for, especially if all the days happen, just a couple times, over an entire winter.
Snow is a good, natural insulator, if you get enough to bury the plants. Ice can even form a protective barrier, too. Citrus farmers, in Florida spray their trees on cold nights. The ice actually protects the foliage, and the fruits, which could be used later, for juicing.
