Fred, the Evergreen Hydrangea is hardy in z8 and up, and should be able to grow in the ground, where you are, with no protection. However, like Fudingzhu tea olive, it would likely not bloom year'round, like they do in a container. There would likely be cold weather breaks, like there are with Camellia season, there.
There are a number of Abelias that grow in the South. This species of Abelia may be the only one that will grow normally, in z5 and z6.
Believe it or not, this shrub type of honeysuckle doesn't have the fragrance, that some of the vining types do.
Correctomundo, as to 'Miss Kim' being a lilac. I have another dwarf variety of lilac, that is getting ready to bloom, too.
Yep, variegated red twig does great in dappled shade.
