Good guess, Fred. I took the cone off to take a peek at my Florida Anise, or Illicium floridana. It seems to have gotten through my -3F winter low.
Take a look at my Florida Anise, and then look at my new plant again:

However, my new plant is a male JAPANESE SKIMMIA, or Skimmia japonica. This type of Skimmia has the sexes on separate plants, like hollies. Since this plant has flower buds on it, already, is how they were able to determine the plant's sex. The female buds and flowers look a tad different, than males.
However, there is a self-pollinating Skimmia (Skimmia reevesiana), in which both male and female flowers are on each plant. So, every Reeve's Skimmia produces berries.
This plant came from a nursery, in Oregon. This is a plant very rare to find, in Michigan. Since, like Aucuba, is rated z7 hardy, contributes to me not finding this plant, locally. Still though, Aucuba is hardy here, if given a tarp covering, over the winter.
