With my first low of the season expected to drop just a degree or two, below 32, I brought in my largest Clivia. The plant weighs pretty close to 2oo lbs. Having soaked up water all season, contributes to its autumn weight. Since it will get no water, until April, it is usually much lighter, in spring, when it goes back outside. Although my tree fern is lighter, its fronds are quite long, and has to be tied, until it gets to its "winter vacation spot", it also came inside. They were a couple of the few remaining container plants to come inside.



Any guess as to what this fruit is? This is perhaps the latest in the year, I have ever harvested these fruits, because, this is the first time I am expected to dip below freezing. Anybody ever try fried fruits of this type? Notice some Swiss chard, a cold hardy green, in the background. The flavor of this healthful green, related to beets, tastes much like spinach...

While on my way to work, at the traffic light, I spotted this tree in its full fall glory. Anybody ever hear of a NORWAY MAPLE, Acer platanoides? They are very hardy, and have great fall color, and hold on their leaves kinda long, too. You can click on the pic and/or hit the plus sign in the upper right, to get a closeup of the tree ..

The SWEETBOX, Sarcococca hookeriana v. humilis, is forming flower buds. These plants bloom in late winter-early spring, here. Sweetbox is another broad-leaved evergreen (BLE). As the common name says, the flowers are fragrant..
