It's very stressful constantly worrying about the power going out in extreme cold, I know. Even without worrying about pets. Two weeks ago the temps that were in the teens overnight on Saturday, with a wind chill of below zero had me stressed out. I was making contingency plans in my head. I'd forgotten that I had bought one of those aluminum thermal blankets so I filed that away.

Then the chemical heat hand and foot warmers that I had. Plan #2. They make full body warmers now, too, that last up to 18 hours.

Plan #3: Pile blankets over my round dining room table and hunker down underneath with the blanket and warmers.

Many people in New England and New York have woodstoves/fireplaces as backup heat or have generators but not apartment buildings, unfortunately.

Does you town offer shelters if the power were to go out?

It's amazing when I think about it. I grew up in a very rural town with raging blizzards year after year and not once did we lose power. The only time was when the entire Eastern Seaboard went out in 1965.
