Washingtonia filifera ‘Truth or Consequences’ blooming for first time

15 years from a one-gallon, 35 miles south of the Arkansas border, these palms have seen single digits multiple times. I have two others as nice as this one, and two others that are smaller, but this is the first one to bloom. Up until recently I would have said the Sabal mexicanas were a more beautiful and equally large palm, but now that the trunks are starting to shed clean I have changed that opinion!

Great looking palms Ryan .
My Washy may never flower due to the fact that it has to reestablish a new crown of fronds every year . Still it's worth it , and maybe one day I'll get surprised .

Thank you and I’ll let you know if they ripen. I got the seed for these palms back in the day from Ian and “Desert Northwest” website which is still active— although it doesn’t look like he’s gone back to collect more seed to sell

Yours looks as great as I’ve ever seen it as well. But then again your latest photo is the first one in ages that displays properly for me without being stretched in aspect ratio. You may be able to get it to bloom with heavy 13-13-13 fertilizer applications. The palms don’t look as good on this fertilizer, versus say a 36-4-12, but they will bear seed like crazy at the expense of having shorter, less elegant fronds (especially with Butia)

I may just let it do its thing and not fertilize because it's getting to the upper limits of my ability to protect it , and I don't want to supersize it with fertilizer .Maybe I can protect it for another 3-5 years and then I don't know what I will do ?

They make some very tall extension ladders… of if that makes you squeamish then rent a man lift!

Thanks and good to hear from you, Austin. I’m not on Facebook. I was on it back when it was available only to students in a few universities). I deleted my account when they’d started limiting the free exchange of opinions and ideas.

I’m going to go outside today to harvest seed. I think the birds carried off about all this Washingtonia seed, which surprises me because as much as they like Sabal fruit, plenty is always left behind. I also have bxj seed, sabal mexicana and palmetto seed, Serena reopens, needle, minor, chamaerops, and chamaedora seed. And I think I finally have sabal minor blue giant seed for Keith… who has been asking for some for years.

Looks like 15 here Thursday night and the 31/19 on Friday night. I have lots of satsumas this year too that I need to get picked before then. Funny how only one out five trees produces good quality fruit. All look beautiful but the other three are pithy and tasteless
