What will happen to this Dallas aquarium Jubaea chinensis ?

I remember some guy ( Tony ? ) who used to post here a lot , and he posted pictures of this Jubaea a while back . I don't think it should be unprotected in the single digits that Dallas is forecast to have in the next few days .
Do they protect it ?

Hi Will. It looks like the trunk is wrapped in lights, so maybe those will be on to help? I honestly don't think anyone knows how cold tolerant Jubaea are at that size.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I bet those lights are LED so I'm not sure they would put out enough heat . Plus to work effectively they would have to be wrapped with blankets .
I bet they have a plan in place for something like this type of weather , at least for the trunk .

I'm afraid you're right if they don't get it protected . There are just too many hours there below its hardiness temp .

It looks like it has recovered well from transplantation, so that gives it a fighting chance. Some never really do fully recover from transplant.

The DA unlike us has no worries about the electric bill and MUST have generators to make up for the power outages. It would be crazy stupid and unprofessional to let it die. I mean,they had trunking Bottle Palms under it for a few years. Those screamed "kept warm" artificially.
I have three in a pot and they have fronds of yellow and brown..but alive and 65-70f temps are on the horizon to rescue them. Too big for indoors this year.I don't mean big as in 5 gallons..just too big for a window sill.

I have little faith that any business would protect an asset like this these days. A few employees turn over and the thing is forgotten. With temps in Dallas between -2 and 3F last night, and more importantly, 4-5 days of temps far below freezing, there is little chance it made it without being protected.

That’s the question everyone is wondering. Wife and I were in north Texas just a couple weeks ago, it was like winter hadn’t even started. Grass was tall and green, Live Oaks looking good, and no palm protection in sight. We have been to the DWA over winter in previous years (did not go this trip) and have never seen the big Jub protected. It was pretty ratty looking a couple three winters back. I hope for the best but am not expecting a good outcome. I think the owner of the DWA had some pretty big Jubs at his house also.

It’s pretty bad here in Oklahoma. I wrapped my big windmills, and my Sabal Birmingham and Louisiana up with blankets and tarp. We’ve had 210 hrs sub 32F and an ultimate low of -8F. I’m sure it’ll toast all my “hardy” sub trops. I bet the McCurtain minors will come back from below ground, but I don’t know about my needle palms. I’m hoping my Aucuba and camellia survive. We’ll be in the 50s in four days and looks like a big spring warmup (50s/30s) so it will be evident pretty quick what lived and died.

Many things take weeks or months to appear fully dead. Conversely, Dead-looking plants may regenerate months later & ultimately make a full recovery.

That is true. You’re right, I’ve had needle palms spear pull after winter, and become a statue for a couple months before coming back to life. That was after a mildly rough winter though. I think it’ll be pretty quickly apparent after this event. We’re on day 12 (maybe more I’ve forgotten) of sub 32F air temps. It was sunny today and my sabals and needles already have bronzing. Even after I went out during the snow events and knocked the snow off the fronds many times. I’ve seen the bronzing appear and then go away some winters, but I think the duration coupled with the ultimate lows is going to quickly show any damage. I won’t rip anything out just yet, in case I’m dead wrong.

I put most of my marginals in in the spring of 2007. Since then, my lowest low was 1F. I think the winter before or after that winter had a 2F low. It was a HARD 1-2 punch to my palms. Everything defoliated except my Needles. They stayed green, but pulled some spears. None of my palms ultimately died. It's amazing what Sabals, Trachies and Needles can take.
