Sabal Palmetto near me

This is in Athens TN, 45 minutes NE of the GA border, about 30-35 miles N statute. To my knowledge, this palm is never covered. It has doubled size this past year. Might be time to pick one up for myself!

That is a great looking S. palmetto. If they would mulch around the trunk out at least two feet to kill that grass, that is competing with it, it would really take off. It's at that stage now where it will grow faster but mulch would really help. The down side is the growing point will get farther from the ground warmth but that is going to happen soon anyway. Nice find.

Nice one Sam. I have had great success with unprotected container-grown palmettos even during the vortex winters. The one in the front of the house (east-facing) has a nice trunk and the fronds are huge. I think they are a really good option for a Southern 7b- which Nashville is with all winters averaged in history. The 30 year is 7b as well. I think their main menace is winter snowfall and extended cold.

Sam, my seed grown, zone 7b palmettos are working on their second foot of clear trunk and one of them has hundreds of ripening seeds.

Hi Steve,

A while back, I had discussed getting a larger potted palmetto specimen from you. Are yours there from the same source you could get the larger sized palmetto from?

Palmetto is quite resilient it seems with winter weather. This one got some damage in recent years but keeps getting larger.

Sam, my palmettos came from seed from Florala, AL and one from Fountain, FL, so they came from a different source.

Will Taylor tried to post here to comment but was not able to. He said the palmetto was planted by an old couple and has never been protected.

I didn’t think it had been protected so I believe Will to be right. What’s interesting is my mother has a sabal palmetto that’s been in the ground since 2011 and is only a little bigger than it was the day it was planted and it gets no protection either. Perhaps this palm drains better being on a bit of a slope. I’d say the heat off that pavement is helpful too. Nevertheless, it’s been an amazing palm!

It looks good. Doesn’t have any winter damaged old fronds that I can see. I wonder what length of freeze durations it has seen? It’s been my experience that is more harmful than freezing events that quickly warm back up.

Mine is a super-grower and is in pretty damp clay so it seems like there is no rhyme or reason to it. I need to post updated photos. There are so many non hurricane-cut vortex winter palmetto survivors in Tennessee (maybe due to winter warm-ups from the Gulf and Plains being west of the Appalachians), that I believe that if they were more widely-planted, there would be some nice success stories. The obstacle is finding them container-grown or waiting for them to grow from seed.

In the 2nd, and especially the third photos, you can see the remnants of a seed stalk to the left of, and in close to the growing point. There are still a few berries there.

Have you thought about appropriating a few? Appropriating, but asking the homeowner first, of course.

You mentioned your mother's palmetto that seems to have not grown much since 2011. I'll bet I have her beat. My palmetto was planted in 2007 as a strapleaf bareroot specimen. Today, it is still alive, but still no trunk! Not even CLOSE to trunking. So, what have, in practical terms, is a Sabal minor with costa-palmate fronds! But you know what? At my latitude and for the severity of winters I get, I'll take a permanently stunted (but alive) palmetto.

I have heard through third party observations online that palmettos exposed to near-lethal cold will often do this. Something clicks in them where they forever give up their will to grow a trunk, but will stay alive long-term as non-trunking palmettos. I wonder if it's a random thing or if it's an intentional strategy. Perhaps a palmetto brought to near-lethal temperatures PURPOSELY gives up a trunk so that the terminal bud can stay close to the soil line and derive the benefit of a degree or two more warmth since it realizes it's in a cold winter location.

Might this have happened to your mother's palmetto?

Hi Jim! Sorry for the delay in responding.

I’m so terrible with germinating seeds, that they would stand a better chance naturally being consumed by birds and then pooped randomly around here and growing up! That being said, I would be glad to collect some for anyone that was interested in that palms offspring. It has been a very tough specimen it seems.

Your idea about mom’s palmetto is very possible. I will say it IS seeming to pickup momentum with the growth. If it gets through winter relatively unscathed again, I would be curious about what it might do next year. Here’s another observation I found to be interesting. Last winter, we didn’t even drop below about 18-20F and experienced only a minuscule amount (under 1 inch) of frozen precipitation. Yet, that palmetto put out a damaged frond that was half rotting to start spring. The subsequent fronds were ok. Why would a palmetto get damaged at that temperature? The palms growth point may be getting close to being above ground. The base is starting to widen so there may be a chance still it will trunk, but BOYYYY has it been slow since that 2014 vortex! But slowly it seems to be picking up momentum. It now has got back to maybe a bit bigger than when I first got it in 2011. I feel like it’s about to take off. So perhaps it takes a very long time to recapture the momentum again once it experienced a near death situation? Makes sense to me. I would agree with you. I’m not sure if it’s permanent, but it may take a number of years to overcome. I agree with you on this.
