The imposing, tree-like Trecul Yucca

One of my favorite tropicals is this Yucca Treculeana. It hails from South Texas and Northern Mexico. We once lived in San Antonio, where they are very common.

Here, this guy was planted in 1994, facing the hot, west sun. Though categorized as Zone 8, it has never shown any ill effects of single-digit temps.

Several times, it has thrust up fairly dramatic seasonal white spring flower blossoms, and on two occasions there were multiple blossoms. You can see the remnants of this spring’s flower stalks in this photo. I think it is ready to display multiple trunks at its growth point.

I really don’t know what its ultimate size will be.

Like a cold hardy Cordy. I like the grassy leaved tree like plants.. Cordys,Yuccas,Beaucarnea,Dracaena. I have all them in my small yards.Sized to fit!

That is amazing!! It could pass as a cordyline. I would love for these to be more popular. That is definitely the most tropical looking yucca I've seen in a zone 8!

I have one in my garden here in North Louisiana. It is probably 16'+ now after buying it as a trunked 6-footer in 2007 from Lowes at maybe $60-$80. It grows very quickly and never seems to be bothered by anything. Mine probably has 6-10 heads that once grown and seperated a bit will be really something nice in ten years or so. I've got lots of spiny plants, but this is the one most likely to pop an eye like a grape...safety glasses an absolute must when working around it since I have let it sucker from every level. If I have one gripe, the flower stalks do not emerge far enough above the foliage compared to most of the other trunking yuccas.

Very nice one Ken .
I have a Schottii that has a nice stiff trunk . Before that Schottii I had an aloifolio in that spot that would get a decent trunk and then fall over just when it looked good . The Schottii is staying nice and straight and I should expect it to flower within a few years .

I’ll check those spent flower stalks, as I really don’t know. Severing the stalks may be a tough job for this non-nimble almost-geezer 😊

Will:

A few years ago (prior to its reaching its current height) the trunk on this Trecul Yucca kept drifting away from the house - in search of more sunlight. Now, I have it securely chained to the house, just in case the weight of a Carolina ice storm would topple the thing over and crush the covered car below it.

I lived in Oregon from Jan 2001 to Sept 2006. Night and day different zone 8's for sure. Here you get so much more satisfaction from the rate of growth of things. But I do miss growing things like Tree Ferns, Fuschia, and Gunnera that just won't live here. Also, in general leafy hardy subtropicals did much better in Oregon. They just get burned up enough here to look terrible during the summer.
