Tennessee's wettest February on record.

Areas of the state got 15-20 inches. Where I live, we totaled out at 15 inches. Most of the state had from 10-15 inches. That's a very long area to have such consistent rainfall. Of course there's more to come but we had enough time for the ground to dry out.

I wonder if other areas in the south had those rain totals? We had just over 15.3" of rain for Feb

Thats a lot of rain and it had no where to go!

I'm still knocked out how almost all winter, you've been reporting temperatures not at all unlike some Zone 8 places like Columbia, SC or Macon, GA.

Until this year, I've thought of Nashville as on-par with my location; Knoxville, as slightly warmer; and Chattanooga and Memphis as consistently warmer.

It just seems that Tennessee would be far more vulnerable to continental Arctic blasts than the Middle-Atlantic. This, due to two big factors: Tennessee being on the wrong side of the Appalachians and the Middle-Atlantic being closer to "big water", as I think Gary Hollar used to call it.

I saw that rain training over in Tennessee and that was way more than anyone needs .
My basement flooded for the second time in 12 years . I'm going to grade it so it never floods again .

2010 basically showed the Nashville area every single place that could possibly flood after we got 15-20 inches in 2 days. Thank heavens I didn't flood. I lived on an island for about 4 days but the house did not flood.

It's because I never used to report temperature forecasts. You might remember the maps I posted a few weeks ago. We get the warmth from the Gulf and being at a latitude further south, we warm up considerably faster. Arctic fronts don't last nearly as long and they don't define a winter. An average day here is going to be warmer than anywhere in DE. To be honest, I've never understood the Wilmington/Nashville comparison and I've only heard it from you but I love discussing weather.

Our record high in February is in the mid 80s. In my opinion, that's due to Southern latitude- water or not. I'll try to post forecasts more often to help show. As far as being on the wrong side of the Appalachians, we're actually on the right side to not get stuck in wedges and to warm up quickly. It's not the Columbia, SC here but it's definitely not the Mid-Atlantic- not that I have anything against the Mid-Atlantic.

I think Northern Mississippi and Alabama had close to those totals as well. Where is that picture from?

Well , we both have our downfalls. Nashville is milder than many expect. Its had its moments with siberian express for a cold shot and the Mid-Atlantic has had its wedgies without the polar shots so much.
I dont live where you do Tommy but can only offer from here 105 miles ENE and I would love Jim's solid z7 climate. He can grow S.palmetto with little effort (or has in the past)

I just think he takes longer to warm up in the springtime and longer to cool down in the wintertime. (not a bad thing) Well known for that region.
Just an appalachian view. Tommy I know you dont live in the Nashville UHI but it has too help some. Nashville has become huge. People use to laugh when it was said it would become as big as Atlanta someday, well its still got a way to go but few contenders in the south are as explosive. Atlanta is so huge, it was noted a few years back that it could start up weather patterns in the area, thunderstorms etc. A fine example of UHI in the south would be in our largest cities,
Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, San Antonio, Nashville

Yes Rob you're climate is quite different from mine. You can be as much as 10 degrees colder- or more. The plateau and mountains are very distinct from Middle and West TN in that respect. Even with a Nashville UHI, there's just no comparing it to Wilmington, DE. The potential for warmth in winter is just in a completely different ball game. To me, it's the difference between a Northern 7 and a Southern 7.

As far S. palmettos with little effort, Jim can correct me on this but I think he has two that are near the house at about 2ft. Jim, you might need to post a picture. I don't remember clearly. It might be different on the plateau but because of our heat, they definitely grow faster here. Mine is large now and unprotected except for proximity to the house. Didn't you have trunked S. palmettos in your yard for years- even on the plateau? Be it what it may but I'm I think the Nashville/Wilmington comparison is off and the two climates are too different. The maps I posted a few weeks ago show it. To me it's like comparing Atlanta and Washington DC.

I think Sabal Palmetto, once established and grown from pots are just as hardy as Trachycarpus in your zone Tommy. You sure have a beauty. Take care of it!
