This Sago has been in the ground for 20 years. It has 2’ of clear trunk and is 6’ tall overall. I haven’t seen a bigger one in Charlotte. They are distinctive specimens.
It is dicey to grow one outside here in town, at the confluence of 8a/7b. They will take 15 degrees F. without turning “bronze” when it is dry outside. BUT if there is sleet, freezing rain, etc. at say 28 degree F, they will bronze or at least “speckle-bronze”. Thus, mustering what it takes to cover one every time the forecast calls for temps in the 20’s and a chance of precip for 3 long winter months is daunting for folks like me who are often too busy or too lazy.
