Will your right, prolonged cold is not to play around with and as bad as a vortex. Old established and mature windmill palms were taken out by prolonged cold here along with a huge bull needle in a neighbors yard, about 6 years ago.
Im trying a Birmingham again and I hope I have as good of luck with it as you have done. I first got one from from Tony Avent a year before he listed them at PDN (1999) and I grew that 4" cup of a palm to 2 feet of fat trunk in 15 years but it was also a victim of that vortex. I didn't own the property at the time of its demise, so it wasn't protected. Like you, I will be ready for prolonged cold should it return.
I live around exit 300 on Tennessee's leg of I-40 at Monterey.
(300 miles to Memphis and 154 miles to the NC line and what a mountainous drive getting to the Piedmont) straight shot to Raleigh though via all the metros in your area. I really like North Carolina, such a diverse and beautiful state.
