Figs are very tolerant of abuse & neglect. I've kept them in pots - many years ago - when winters were colder (in terms of both minimum temperature and duration of season) and they would damage most years if planted out. Since 2000, that really hasn't been an issue, so now I go in-ground. But, heck, I used to keep them in pots a long time. Got good fruit from them. The only issue was when I kept them inside, they would tend to break dormancy in late January/early February. Then the tender, new growth would get clobbered with spider mites. Also, the new growth tended to be very long and weak. By the time I put them out in spring, I often had to cut back a lot of the indoor growth.
