My amateur opinion: Both Birminghams are Birminghams. The observed differences could be chalked up to so many things. The incident with the car. The different planting sites. Is one in more sun than the other? Does one have more access to ground water than the other? I think environment can play a huge factor in how two trees of the same species can look so different. I see a lot of this in dicots -- deciduous and evergreen.
