I say that but , now that I think about it , I did have a landscape worker scalp it flush to the ground while it was still solid and not mush . He may have cut off the growing bud . The plant was solid from about 12" down , along with a solid center . I may have to reassess my previous thinking about why it died . I'll have other winters to learn more .
I do mulch heavily which I know helps .
