First I have a picture of one of my Thailand Giant EE's :

Ensete maurelii after one winter in the ground .
My other one died after surviving several winters , but the winter before last , when I got 9 days below 32F in a row , was too much for it . It takes about three seasons to get huge from a small pot , so next year it will be super showy .
( the ground cover are volunteer Cocktail Tomatoes that I let go wild all over the yard . They taste great , and are showy with bright red fruit , unless I've harvested them lol ) :

Sorry about the 2 bad pictures . All three pictures of the fruit are three different areas of the tree . I was concerned when hundreds of fruit dropped off the tree in June . Many were dime , quarter and a few half dollar sized fruit . Looks like it should be a good crop anyway :

Overview ; I think it's close to full size ( 15 feet ) , so I guess , in the future , it can spend most of its energy on producing fruit ? I just watered it the other day since I've had less than an inch of rain in 2 months , and I've had plenty of heat so far . Many places around me have had plenty of rain but I keep missing the storms :

Funny, I recently had some clown on FB claim Ensete Maurelli is hardy to z6. He claims he never protected it in z6 Ohio and it came back every year.

Zone 6a, 20 miles SE of Pittsburgh
Previous gardens in Dubois, Pa, Walnut Creek, CA, and Lancaster, NY
Other interests: Edibles, fragrance, hummingbirds and butterflies, and deer resistance

Ensete maureliis don't like frozen soil for sure . That is the main difference from the winters it survived here and the winter that killed it . After nine days below 32F with nighttime lows of 7F-25F during that period , you can imagine that the ground had a good long time to freeze .
I say that but , now that I think about it , I did have a landscape worker scalp it flush to the ground while it was still solid and not mush . He may have cut off the growing bud . The plant was solid from about 12" down , along with a solid center . I may have to reassess my previous thinking about why it died . I'll have other winters to learn more .
I do mulch heavily which I know helps .

It looks its best in December when the fruit gets bright yellow . A real showstopper .

That is so awesome. Wish mine could have survived. It would be bearing by now. Just about 5 degrees too cold here.

They are a show stopper plant for here Dave . It's great that they look their best in November , December , and January .
