"Subtropical". Meaning what?

I notice that Koppen calls much of the east coast subtropical..north Texas the same as south. After a few years of reading some northerly areas called subtropical I THINK the meaning is "Plant a tropical plant in May and it will grow just as well as in the tropics. Until winter." It seems like koppen doesn't factor in the survival of tropical plants and creatures..just what summers are like.
