Re: A wonderful visit to Gary's Nursery in New Bern, NC
I never bought off of Gary directly, but through other folks who sell his stuff. I have a 'Hatteras' Minor that he grew, and I think my 'Birmingham' also came from his stock. I got these plants in 2007, plopped them in the ground in my true 7a location, and with the most minimal protection (my protection schemes with them are more to guard against fierce winter winds rather than cold), they just do their thing year after year. Both palms are, I estimate, about the same age. The Minor started blooming 4 or 5 years after being planted. The Birmingham has yet to bloom. So that tells me there's something genetically different between the two plants. The Minor has fathered (or is it mothered?) many "volunteers" -- some that died and some that survived. I'd like to see the same thing with the Birmingham someday.
I miss Gary's contributions to this online community. He is SORELY missed.
