The study began in 2019 when his tomb, at the Monastery of Odivelas, was opened and its content was removed and classified.
Scientists found the king's remains were surprisingly in good conditions, namely his skull.
They also recovered pieces of the cloth the king was buried and his royal sword.
The reconstitution of the face was possible with the help of the University of Liverpool.
The king was c. 1,65m height, had blue eyes and fair hair, and, uncommon for the time, he had all his teeth.
The Monastery where the king rests for 700 years was ordered to be built by D.Diniz in 1295 to thank having escaped from the attack of a bear while hunting in Beja.
Built in the late gothic style, it was given to the Bernardas nuns of the Order of Cister of Saint Bernard de Claraval.
The Monastery suffered several changes during the reigns of Kings D.João IV (1604-56) and D.João V (1706-50), but it had to be rebuilt, this time in a neoclassic style, after the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
In 1834, after the liberal wars, all religious orders were extinct in Portugal.
While convents of the male orders were simply closed, feminine orders were let opened until the death of the last nun.
This happened in Odivelas in 1888.
Some years later, Infante D.Afonso (King D.Carlos' younger brother) founded the Odivelas Infante D.Afonso Institute, a school for daughters of army and naval militaries.
The school closed recently among great criticism.
The Monastery is due to open in 2026 as a Museum, exhibiting the king's sword, his cloths, and the work that has been done since 2019.
Watch the whole photos. The Church, the cloister and the magnificent kitchen.
