Simply put, almost nothing is ever black and white, and that includes his regime. I’ve heard from more than a few older Spaniards that not everything was bad back then. Some were even better—e.g. finding employment.
Even if I dod not agree with the present Govt. in general and in particular about its “harassing” the monarchy, making apology of the Francoist regime is not acceptable. Saying it was the best of Spain is the last century is simply revolting, IMO.
Good summary! And if I may add another observation of mine: present-day Spain is the parallel opposite of present-day Poland.
Both were traditionally very Catholic countries. Spain suffered a bloody civil war, in which the Right won and established a 36 year dictatorship. Poland was devastated by the Nazis and the Soviets in WW2, and endured a communist regime for 44 years thereafter.
Post-Franco Spain became a mainly center-left country—less Catholic, very welcoming to refugees, embracing LGBT causes. Post-communist Poland lurched right, re-embracing it’s faith, rejecting refugees, and hostile to LGBT ideology.
