For respect of my king and of his family, I never believed those rumours.........
Let's not use the word "persecute" which I believe was not Jane's intention, but analyse some cases.
Luckily for the "analysed", the press was rather tamed in the 19-early 20th century centuries and the only openely divulged case was Pr.Aribert of Anhalt with his sad wedding to Pss Marie Louise of S.Holstein.
Ludwig II's homossexuality was never openely exposed in a strongly catholic Bavaria, and he even tried to do what was expected of him by engageing to his cousin Sophie.
Would the marriage be consumated or not, that is another history.
One wonders what Pr.Franz would have done should Bavaria have remained an independent kingdom.
Assuming his sexuality or "do the right thing" ?
Many russian grand-dukes were openely bi-sexual and their wives and the court in general turned the blind eye.
In Bulgaria, gay and ambitious Tsar Ferdinand "did the right thing" by marrying and assuring the succession to his new kingdom with Pss Marie-Louise of Parma, and then, for the sake of appearances, contracted a second blank wedding to the pss of Reuss, who allowed him space for his extra-marital affairs.
Ernie of H-Darmstadt comes to mind but he "needed" to have a male heir so the poor chap had to remarry after the divorce from Victoria-Melita.
As far as monarchies are concerned, homo and heterossexuality are concerned can have a major effect other than mere gossip since a monarch is expected to marry and produce an heir and, if not by genetic incompatibility reasons (the Luxembourg case ?) we live in times where the people are expected - demand ! - to know every inch of their monarch's life.
And their sexuality is a major part of their lives.
