The principality is named after the princes rather than the other way around. Burg Liechtenstein is a castle in Lower Austria. Karl I von Liechtenstein, Governor (Stattholder) of Bohemia, was created a Prince of the Empire in 1608 (Fürst von Liechtenstein). His grandson, Fürst Johann Adam I, purchased the Lordships of Vaduz and Schellenberg in 1699 and 1712, which the Emperor Karl VI raised to the rank of a principality in 1719, for his former tutor, Anton Florian, Fürst von Liechtenstein, and the new principality was named after its prince.
