What is clear is that unlike their brazilian cousins (descendants of D.Pedro d'Alcantara), the american Braganzas never contested their father's renunciation to the throne, they did not vindicate the headship of the PRF as descendants of D.Miguel II's eldest son, nor did they put any claim to a princely title.
I imagine they preferred to secure the american citizenship and the privileges that came with.
In order to regain her american citizenship after her husband's death, Anita had to renounce to her princely titles. Anita was the guardian of her children and she wanted they had american citizenship too. I guess they had to renounce their titles in order to become american citizens.
Thank you José! That makes sense. Do you know if any documentation / announcement concerning the renunciations has ever appeared in published form, perhaps in an article about Anita? Or is the story of her and the children's renunciation more of an apocryphal one, not yet supported by written evidence?
It would be interesting to know the renunciation date for this reason: After prolonged wrangling with her future husband and his father to guarantee her equality of rank and title with her husband when they married, I wonder if perhaps Anita waited until after her father-in-law's death before communicating her renunciation.
