This week, the UK hosts a visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan, the last monarchs holding that imperial title. The last empress to reign as a consort in a European nation was Zita, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary 1916-1918. The last European woman to be an empress consort must have been Elizabeth, consort to King George VI King of the UK 1936-1952 and Emperor of India 1936-2947 Prior to Elizabeth, the Empresses of India from Europe were Mary, Alexandra, and Victoria.
