In the case of Prince Wilhelm, the National Assembly wasn't given much of a choice by the guarantor powers. Their first choice (was probably a republic, but that being unacceptable to the powers) was Prince Alfred of the UK. As many posters and lurkers here will know, his mother Queen Victoria declined on his behalf because the late Prince Albert had arranged with his brother for Affie to succeed to the throne of Coburg.

It is my understanding that both Otto and then George were invited to be monarchs of Greece. Invited by whom?
During the London Conference of 1832 Britain, France and Russia decided to offer the throne to Otto. In 1863, Prince Wilhelm of Denmark was offered the throne by the Greek National Assembly.
