Lutheran Astrid of Sweden married into the Catholic Belgian dynasty and converted a few years after her marriage. So it wasn't a legal requirement (the first Coburg king remained a protestant throughout his life) but public expectation was there.
Prince Hendrik of Denmark didn't have to convert to the Lutheran faith; he chose to voluntarily, just like Astrid. She actually wanted to convert before marriage, but was advised by a priest to wait and do so out of sincere conviction. As it was, she got received into the Catholic Church four years later. Queen Silvia was raised as a Lutheran, despite having a Catholic mother. The rules on interfaith marriages have been different in Germany -- not to mention frustrating and inconsistent.
