Small technicality: I assume you meant that James was styled as Lord Carnegie only from 1941 to 1959 -- correct?
The reason for this would be that his grandfather (Charles Carnegie, the 10th Earl of Southesk) was still living, as of his birth in 1929. Since his father (also named Charles) was the heir, and the only lesser title available for use by courtesy was Lord Carnegie, James would have been styled only as Honourable for the first 12 years of his life -- correct?
