The main reason why i don't expect the firstborn of the Princess of Orange to have a first name that would carry a regal number (II or IV) is because of her father's rather degrading comment that the regal numbers remind him of farm animals. That comment was made during an interview before his succession. Can you imagine the Princess naming a firstborn son Willem as in the future Willem IV and than every channel repeating her father's comment on how Willem IV stands in a pasture next to Bertha XXII?
Since Wilhelmina the tradition in the Dutch Royal family has been to pick a name with an old connection but that does not need a regal number.
If we look to other countries, notably Prussia, there is precedent for separate numberings of single and double names: Friedrich I was succeeded by Friedrich Wilhelm I, then came Friedrich II, Friedrich Wilhelm II, III and IV, and then (after Wilhelm I) there was Friedrich III. In other words, Friedrich and Friedrich Wilhelm were regarded as different regnal names. If we transfer this logic to the Netherlands, regarding Willem and Willem-Alexander as different regnal names would mean that there might well be a Willem IV (or for that matter, a Willem-Alexander II) at some point in the future, and that the current king is not counted as Willem IV.
I hope there is a Willem-Alexander II someday. I too wouldn't have minded, maybe I would have preferred him to go be Willem IV Alexander.
Or he could be a Willem-Alexander I if in the future there will be another W-A in the steps of the throne.
I wouldn't have seen anything wrong with a Willem IV Alexander the same way as a Carl XVI Gustav who might have been succeeded by a Carl XVII Philip.
