If we transfer this logic to the Netherlands, regarding Willem and Willem-Alexander as different regnal names would mean that there might well be a Willem IV (or for that matter, a Willem-Alexander II) at some point in the future, and that the current king is not counted as Willem IV.
I hope there is a Willem-Alexander II someday. I too wouldn't have minded, maybe I would have preferred him to go be Willem IV Alexander.
Or he could be a Willem-Alexander I if in the future there will be another W-A in the steps of the throne.
I wouldn't have seen anything wrong with a Willem IV Alexander the same way as a Carl XVI Gustav who might have been succeeded by a Carl XVII Philip.
