Amsterdam is the Dutch capital, but the government and parliament have their seats in The Hague, at the Binnenhof, the medieval castle-complex that was build by the counts of Holland. Around the Binnenhof, all departments have their office buildings.
The Dutch King lives at Eikenhorst in Wassenaar, which is about a 15 minute ride by car to the center of The Hague (in rush-hour it will be 20-25 minutes top). Wassenaar borders the northern border of The Hague, the neighborhood of 'Bezuidenhout' which is also where Huis ten Bosch is located.
The working palace of the King, now also being renovated, is Noordeinde Palace in the center of The Hague. From Huis ten Bosch to Noordeinde is about 10 minutes by car.
As capital, Amsterdam plays an important role during f.e.state-visits and new year's receptions are often hosted in Amsterdam at the Palace at the Dam. But for day-to-day work, meeting the PM every week, meeting other members of the cabinet, all these things are done in The Hague/ Wassenaar.
