Joe Kelly did a really good job at fleshing him out and making him more than just the straight mercenary type that Rob Leifeld invented him as. Kelly added all sorts of layers to him, and his madness was something that hovered in the background rather than always being in your face. Rick Remenders X-Force did well with the character, as did Daniel Way in my opinion.
The current ongoing title has been a disappointment. Its written by a couple of guys who write comedy for TV and have no experience writing comics, so its little more than a succession of tit and fart jokes.

: Deadpool annoys the piss out of me with his
: 4th-wall breaking "look how wacky-crazy
: I am!" antics. He's also got that
: whole 1990's kewl-factor going on where he
: comes across as a character who exists
: solely to be Extreme! with In-Your-Face!
: attitude to go with a gritty, dark past that
: was intended to give him depth but actually
: just makes him a wanker.
:
: I know he's got alot of fans, but I don't
: see the appeal. He's just got no redeeming
: qualities for me.
