I have to admit; I do have several of the new, overseas Dietz lanterns, and I like them.
I tend to keep my older, American made examples as collectibles. I know, they were made to be used. And it's not like I even have anything rare and/or valuable. I can't explain it.
I have gotten a little better though.
I have an American made streamlined Blizzard that I actually use, as well as an Embury No.2 Air Pilot.
That's a nice lantern to burn. Gives a nice bright light, and, personally, I love the style of them.
I even fire up a Traffic Gard from time to time.
They weren't made to put out a lot of light, but it's such a cool little lantern.
But, most of the time, I'm probably burning a Marlboro version Dietz Junior, or a No.8 Air Pilot. Also overseas version.
I guess the reason I like even the foreign made Dietz lanterns, is for the name. Any mass produced kerosene lantern you buy today is going to be foreign made, but at least the Dietz name has some great American history behind it.
Then, of course, you can always go with a W.T. Kirkman.
Manufactured by Dietz, if I'm not mistaken, but I believe Woody makes improvements to his versions.
Or, for a higher-end lantern, Woody does offer his own custom made lanterns. Built in his American shop. (That's another one I have put away just as a collectible.) I'm so ashamed.
OK. That's my two cents worth.
I'll be curious to see what others have to say on this subject.
And keep us all informed as to what you decide to go with for everyday use!
Enjoy!
