There are three variations of globe guards I'm aware of, the early "Y" shape, the intermediate Monarch style like you described (20s-30s?, can't tell on mine the date is completely obliterated) and the later type which come up vertically then crossover. And now that you mention it, I have noticed more of the early and later types around, out of the nine Hy-Lo lanterns I have only one has the Monarch style globe guards and all have the simple lift loop on the plate.
