Continuation of Language wittering
This particular series of beefs (why is a complaint called a beef?) is about how most of us grossly over-use particular words. This is especially apparent when one listens to the radio, though one also hears it in face to face conversations.
Most radio reporters are sufficiently aware of the words that they use to avoid such pitfalls (or pratfalls?), but the folk that they interview ….. !!!!!
Anyone who wants to communicate effectively with other people, especially in public, needs a friend/voice coach/elocution teacher to avoid these pitfalls.
I know that some folk would say that such coaching would spoil the naturalness and spontaneity of their conversation, but there is little evidence to prove this. Indeed, the contrast between the fluency of many, trained interviewers and their untrained interviewees is quite marked - as is the difference between trained and untrained interviewers. Most of the great orators and persuaders are very well aware of their choice of words.
One of the current crop of over-used words is the dreaded 'actual', as in:
'I actually went out even although it was actually raining at the time. The bus was actually 5 minutes late. I got even wetter as the actual driver wouldn't let me get out of the actual rain and on to the bus before all the other passengers had got off. Actually, I was so wet that the actual ticket disintegrated in my hands ….' etc etc etc ad nauseum.
That's all for this time, and, actually, it's time to go.
Happy reading regards Majic
